The flowers! Such wonderful flowers!

Submitted by El_Seed on Thu, 05/07/2009 - 15:18.

Our flowers are starting to peek their infant heads out to take full advantage of what sun does come out during the day. Green, purple, yellow, and a delicious red. The colors have been the only thing available since about the first of April thanks to lots of cloudy days. The colors always seem more vibrant with a sky full of sun.

Our vegetable garden is starting to show signs of life! Our beans and cucumber have been peeking out. Nothing else has shown up but then again we planted seeds instead of planting seedlings this year. It turned out we just didn't have the time to start them this year. In this hectic age we live in it is becoming more of a luxury to plant gardens for some. This is a terrible idea that someone does not have the time to enjoy nature. How did we get to this point as a species and how can we fix it?

The primary reason is urbanization. Even suburbanites are not immune. As we've built the American dream across vast regions we've slowly shrunk the plots of land associated with our property. Urbanites will tell you there just aren't any places to even sit a pot outside anymore. We've sealed our houses, condo's, and apartments to help prevent the outside from coming in but in the process have removed ourselves from the outdoors.

Homeowners associates have become rampant in suburban communities. It is a travesty that these organizations can dictate what plants you can and cannot have. Some even prevent outdoor vegetable gardens! Hopefully if you live with a homeowners association they have at least provided a community garden.

It is a lesson in futility though. As they say life finds a way. We live on a rock hurlling though space that is one big garden. As spring has sprung we start seeing life renew itself. Let's start by openning the door and stepping out into a world that we as an animal species are well designed to live in and plant something!
